Historical Day for Safer Driving: 4 States Bring Texting Bans into Effect

It's Christmas in July for the safe driving community. Today, July 1,laws banning texting while driving come into effect in 4 states:

  • Georgia
  • Iowa
  • Michigan
  • Wyoming

Although all the laws outlaw texting while driving, their similarities end there. In Georgia, drivers will enjoy a one-month 'probationary period' as state troopers have been instructed to educate, rather than sanction, violators. Iowa's newest drivers will be prohibited from even talking on their cell phones while behind the wheel. Michigan motorists caught texting - even at a red light - face a $100 fine for their first offense, and $200 if caught a second time.

Wyoming seems to have the toughest of the bunch. Not only is texting while driving subject to primary enforcement (meaning the police may pull over drivers for that offense alone), it also applies to any handheld device. Fiddling with your mp3 player instead of watching the road could land you a $75 ticket.
